Photos from Little Grand Rapids / Omazinaakizonan Mishibaawitigong

The photographs in this book were taken by the American anthropologist A. Irving Hallowell in the years between 1932 and 1940. He travelled the Berens River by canoe and visited the community of around 250 people, seven times in ten years. Hallowell went to talk to the Indigenous people about their lives and their ways of thinking about the world. This intimate view of a small community is presented as a beautifully designed, 96-page, large-format coffee-table book printed in a specialized CMYK black technique to augment the photograph details. The language is simple, the story is captivating. The bilingual book was prepared for the Manitoba Museum’s Nametwaawin Outreach Project and typeset in Anishinaabemowin and English. This is the first book in a two-part series, the second being, the Pauingassi Collection. 2023

The book identifies people in the community for future generations.

Anikó, you have been a dream to work with. You’re patient, meticulous, and infinitely creative in your design. We have loved every step of working together on this book – you took our vision and made it into a beautiful reality. Huge thanks!
